1898 Stories from Virgil - Full Leather Prize Binding, Decorative Antique Leatherbound Book
“Stories from Virgil" by the Rev. Alfred J. Church. With color frontispiece and twenty-four full page illustrations from Pinelli's Designs. Published by Seeley and Co. Limited, London: 1898. Fine marbled end papers and all three page edges also marbled. The front pastedown contains a prize bookplate from King Edward VI Middle School in Norwich, England. The bookplate notes that the book was originally awarded to A.S. Jefferies for 1st Place in the 2nd Latin Class' Annual Examination in December, 1900.
The prize binding consists of full red leather with the school crest stamped in bright gold gilt in the center of the front cover. A decorative gilt rule borders the perimeter of both the front and rear covers. Raised bands separate the spine into six sections with the title and author information stamped in gilt over a brown leather insert in section two (from the top). Elaborate gilt decoration
