The Minolta XG-9 is a dual-mode camera which can be used in Auto and Manual exposure modes. It has an aperture-priority mode "A" where the user selects the aperture and the camera will choose the corresponding shutter speed. The shutter speed selected by the camera is shown in the viewfinder by a red LED. In the "A" mode you can "override" the camera to under- or overexpose your pictures by up to two stops. In situations requiring a shutter speed faster than XG-9s top speed of 1/1000s, the camera will not fire to prevent overexposure. The camera also operated in full manual mode, where the built in meter will assist in choosing exposure values to yield a 'properly' exposed photo.
