This is a Pal-Bell Company metal 300 Bronze box designed and sculpted by Maurice Ascalon (1913-2003). The box is made of bronze and treated with verdigris or a chemically induced green patina. This box was made in 1945.
The box has an attractive geometric design that includes sharp horizontal lines and art deco type curves. The bottom has two curves and is lifted by two footings. The box is stamped under lid “PAL-BELL CO. Made in Israel”. While the outside is gold and green bronze, the inside is a beautiful blue.
It measures 6 1/2” long x 3 3/4” wide and approx 2 3/4” high with handle. It is an excellent condition. There are no scratches. There are a few small distressed areas which may just be the design
Ascalon is considered to be the father of the modern Israeli decorative arts movement. He founded Pal-Bell which became known for sophisticated, high-quality Judaic- themed and secular decorative art pieces in brass and bronze. The company was in business from 1939-1956.
