The Tetrarch tank, designed as a successor to the Light Tank Mk VI, was developed by Vickers Armstrong starting in 1937. After trials in 1938, it was accepted into the British Army, though not initially for the light tank role. Production commenced mid-1940, with deliveries starting in November. Despite interruptions due to bombing, production continued until the first quarter of 1942. The Army accepted available Tetrarchs and relied on American Locust production for future needs. Armed with a 2pdr gun and coaxial machine-gun in its Daimler Armored Car-derived turret, it featured a skid steering system and optional enhancements like a rear fuel tank and Littlejohn adaptor. It first saw combat in Madagascar in 1942, with three Special Service Squadrons formed, including the Airborne Light Tank Squadron. Carried by Hamilcar gliders, 18-20 Tetrarchs supported the 6th Airborne Division in Normandy, serving until replaced by Cromwells.
